Saatva Mattress Review

by Joe Auer from

Saatva is one of the few companies that sells an innerspring mattress exclusively online.  It does offer great value (See how Saatva compares to leading brands HERE), but I do have a few complaints as well.  Read further for my full Saatva mattress review.

Who Should Be Interested In Saatva?

  • You Want To Buy Online– Buying a mattress online is becoming more and more popular, and Saatva is one of the few innerspring companies that sells online.
  • You Want Good Value– The online-only business model let’s Saatva compete very well on price compared to more mainstream innerspring brands (think Beautyrest or Stearns & Foster)
  • You Hate Sleeping Hot– Saatva is an innerspring mattress with bio-based foam on top. It does not sleep hot at all.
  • You Want A Mattress With Great Construction and Support– I won’t get into the nitty-gritty details of the construction, but the “coil-on-coil” system the company uses is a major step up from other innerspring competitors at the lower price range.

Why You Might Not Want To Look At Saatva

  • You Want A Memory Foam Feel– Those who are used to memory foam or are seeking out that memory foam feel will not get experience from Saatva. I would look at other alternatives if this applies to you.
  • You Like To Sink Into The Mattress– Because it isn’t pure foam, you don’t really get the feeling where the mattress envelops around you. You feel you sleep “on” the mattress, rather than “in” the mattress.
  • You Absolutely Need To Try The Mattress Out In A Store– Saatva is available only online, so you won’t know the exact feel beforehand.

Saatva Motion Transfer Test

One thing that people worry about with spring mattresses is motion transfer.  This is a concern if you’re sleeping with a partner, especially if one of you is known for moving around throughout the night.  The Saatva performs well for motion transfer, see the video below:

Saatva Firmness and Feel

Most people have not slept on a hybrid mattress before, and even if you have, each hybrid is different; some feel more like a spring mattress, while others feel more like a memory foam mattress.  Watch the video below to get an idea of the feel and firmness of the Saatva (the Luxury Firm is shown).

Other Key Takeaways

  • The Company Is Somewhat “Greener” Than Most– The company uses bio-based foams and recycled steel.
  • There Will Be A Shipping Charge– Note that Saatva does charge for shipping at the end of the buying process, so make sure to note that as you’re comparing prices with other mattress companies
  • The Bed Is Slightly Firmer Than The Average Bed– The “luxury firm” is what 90% of people buy. It is very comfortable, but is probably slightly on the firmer side of the spectrum.

Final Recommendation

Saatva is one of the first mattresses I reviewed, and interestingly still remains among my top reviewed mattresses.  An advantage of Saatva as well is that they have been around for a number of years, so you have the benefit of other user reviews to help you make your decision.

Saatva Mattress Customer Reviews

We just had the firm version of their mattress, and I agree with your assessment. You do not sink into the mattress at all, and they state that. However, the mattress is hard as a rock, and the construction feels cheap and springy. I would equate it to the low end bed you feel in a mattress store. They try to dress up the quilting/outside, but we had nights of pain with the mattress, and returned it to buy a name brand we tested in the store. I do not recommend this mattress, as the price is no value if you get a good deal in a store. The customer does take a risk with “risk free”, because you need to sleep on it, till it’s returned and/or you have somewhere to store it. They do have nice customer service, but I think they could do a much better job on the product.

Hi. I first thought I really loved the tempur pedic cloud breeze. I went to sleeps and found I was mostly loving the hybrid feels of the beauty rest and the sterns and foster lux estate hybrid.

I really don’t want to buy from sleeps with all of the friendly online options.

My Hubbie loved the sterns and foster and liked the memory foam but felt he’d get tired of it quickly with the sinking feeling.

We both work as hairstylists in nyc and have pretty rough back and hip issues.

We are both very light sleepers who move around quite a bit. We both tend to wake up on our backs but some side sleeping is done too. Currently sleeping on a sealy innerspring that’s 10 years old and totally shot which may account for our disturbed sleep patterns.

We are upgrading to a king and want to spend no more than 2200$ roughy.

Any recommendations ??

Very drawn to saatva but also loom and leaf or keetsa. Ugh too many choices need to commit!!!

Allen says

Intrigued by Saatva, but concerned about the “luxury firm” being too firm. I like firm but soft and need good motion control because we both roll around a lot. Currently have a Serta pillow top. Can you also comment on other mattress brands “off gassing” please?

Where Have You’ve Been All Our Lives?!!!

We have purchased very expensive mattresses in the past out of high end stores and even had one made to order. Then I saw the Saatva commercial on TV and decided to do some research and read the reviews. We decided to give Saatva a try. Oh my God! We’re in love with our Saatva Luxury Firm king mattress. This mattress makes me excited to go to bed. We haven’t had a good night sleep in years. We enjoy a more restful sleep. This is the best mattress we ever bought! I’ve had my king Luxury firm for a month now and glad we’ve opted for the Saatva. The mattress is so comfortable and firm. We wake up well rested and we have no more back and neck pains. I highly recommend the Saatva mattress and you will fall in love with it like we did!!!

Best mattress EVER!

I spent months looking at reviews and finally decided on the Saatva mattress. I had seen it initially but wanted to be sure it was the best for me. I must say, I wished I hadn’t waited so long. Comfortable, supportive, the best sleep in ages. Just buy one. I have the luxury -firm!

So many reasons to love

Buying a new mattress wasn’t going to be easy for my husband and I. He has lower back issues. The beds we’ve had didn’t support enough in the lumbar area and he was miserable. He always thought we needed firmer but that didnt work for me.
We got one of those sleep number beds and it was aweful. For both of us.
I did a lot of research on the Internet. Finding Saatva in the reviews on a Chiropractic site.
Giving that we can try it for 75 nights, the cost was very reasonable and it’s made in the USA… I designed what would work best for us. We got a King Luxury Firm, the 4″ foundation because we aren’t very tall people and a frame for less than 2k.
The delivery company was awesome..they contract out delivery companies… the guys were awesome, professional and we’re right on time.

We love the edge of the bed, it’s so supportive and firm. Stable.
Then the bed it self… you can roll over and distrub the other person. But any way you lay you just are cradled in it. We’ve had no pain. His back doesn’t stab with nerve pain, joints aren’t stiff.. we just have been waking up rested.

The only thing I can say bad is that I don’t want to get up. :)

Great Mattress and Company…Even Better Price and Customer Service

The wife and I have been in a constant battle to get a mattress that fit both our needs. She purchased a feathertop bed which lasted a few years; I in turn convinced her we needed a sleep number and purchased a I10 Top of the line model. Then we decided we’ll go up to a King Size for more room and less movement and get an entire new set up. That is when we went looking and found Saatva! Not what we thought conventional but upon receiving our selection (Ultra Premium EURO Pillow Top) we were surprised and extremely pleased. Now over a year into sleeping on this setup, we are charmed as can be with our selection.

The bed is completely broken in and well worth every penny albeit much less expensive than some of the Serta, Sealy and Stearns and Fosters we were looking at purchasing. If you have any doubts, Saatva’s customer service has been more than supportive on any of our concerns or issues. I was skeptical and wanted to return the bed due to it being somewhat firm upon removing but after a few weeks it broke in, now its like sleeping on a cloud but not an over slept in cloud.. it retains its composure until you get in it, then conforms. Every night it feels firm and very supportive but once you settle it, it provides you great restful sleep. Heat Transfer is great and we have it now in Germany where I work and without AC it still does not hold heat during hot summer days. I cannot say enough about the bed or company. I’m a believer, for the price point and as a patient comparative shopper, I would absolutely purchase another and I certainly recommend the bedding system to anyone I talk to in the market.

Unbiased Saatva Mattress Review & Ratings

What You Need To Know

THE GOOD: Top-rated innerspring mattress • strong customer service • sophisticated (spring-based) comfort layer for the price.

THE BAD: Spotty delivery timeliness & quality • controversial marketing claims • durability / longevity likely no better than fair • somewhat heavy weight.

THE MATTRESS: The Saatva mattress (made in USA) features a pillow top over coil-on-coil support. (See specs.) Like other mattresses in the price range, about 20% of owners use the bed for only occasional / temporary use. The mattress is not adjustable base compatible.

THE COMPETITION: Mainly other innerspring mattresses. Compare Saatva to other brands in the side-by-side mattress comparison.

THE COMPANY / RETAILER: Saatva ( is based in Westport, CT and began operations in 2011. (See buying a mattress online: what to know.)

Saatva Mattress Ratings

The ratings – based on 270+ consumer reviews gathered using an unbiased, accurate methodology – show how Saatva mattress rates in comparison to the average mattress.

Owner satisfaction B The Saatva mattress has 81% owner satisfaction. Get the details.
Estimated durability / longevity C Being a fairly new brand, long-term owner experience data is not abundant. Available data suggests no better than fair durability / longevity. Innerspring beds (especially pillow tops) are often not strong performers in this area.
Price B- $600-$1300 depending on size. Delivery is around $100. A foundation costs $150-$300.
Value B- Saatva’s coil-on-coil system is a kind of feature often found only on pricier beds. And Saatva’s value is fairly strong when compared against offerings from major innerspring mattress makers. However, less expensive beds with similar or better satisfaction are available.
Model options B Three firmness choices are available.
Good for all sleep positions B See sleep position ratings for the three Saatva models.
Less (back) pain C+ See mattresses and pain relief for general analysis.
Conforming ability B- A highly conforming bed is one that contours to the sleeper resulting in a cradling, pressure-point-free sensation. Saatva performs somewhat above average, but better conforming mattresses are available, namely those with more memory foam content.
General support C+ Support appears to be no worse than average, but some larger people / couples may find it inadequate especially over the long term.
Edge support C Sitting or sleeping near the edge of the mattress is adequate for most owners.
Easy to move on B The firmer models especially tend to provide little resistance to movement and changing positions.
Motion isolation C Motion isolation – the ability of a bed to absorb a person’s movement so as to not disturb another person – is neither a clear strength nor clear weakness of the bed. Consumers who have previously owned a memory foam mattress have the greatest potential to be dissatisfied. (General analysis: mattress motion isolation.)
No initial off gassing odor B- About 7% of owners report a significant unpleasant initial odor. (General analysis: mattress off gassing.)
No sleeping hot B- About 5% of owners report bothersome heat retention. The Plush Soft model is probably most likely to sleep hot among the three models due to the fact that a person will sleep deeper into the mattress. (General analysis: mattresses and sleeping hot.)
Avg- sized person friendly B The Saatva mattress is suited for people of average size, namely those 130-230 pounds.
Large person friendly B- The mattress is at least fairly suited for people over 230 pounds, but the Plush Soft model may envelop a large sleeper too much.
Small person friendly B- The 14.5″ model is often too tall for shorter people. And because smaller people (those under 110 pounds) often do not exert enough pressure on a firmer mattress to result in conforming support, the Plush Soft model may be best.
Good for sex B Like innerspring beds in general, Saatva appears to rate above average on this issue. (See mattresses and sex for general analysis).
Fast break in C+ Side sleepers tend to report the longest break-in time.
Predictable height D+ An above average number of owners report that, at least initially, the bed has a somewhat different (usually taller) height than the stated specs. This may make entry / exit as well as fitting sheets challenging.
No noise B- About 5% of owners report significant noise coming from the springs. This is similar to the rate of innerspring mattresses overall.
Easy to lift, handle, move D+ A queen-sized model weighs about 115 pounds. The 14.5″ model comes with handles, but they are for rotation only – not to carry the mattress. Learn more about Saatva’s weight.
Easy to maintain C The Saatva mattress is one sided and no flip. Rotating it (head to foot) at least once a year may be necessary to prevent and minimize sagging / wear. Given the considerable weight of the mattress, doing so may require more than one person.

Saatva Company Ratings

The ratings below – based on consumer experiences and the evaluation of Sleep Like The Dead – show how Saatva compares to the average mattress manufacturer.

Warranty coverage B 15-year warranty. This includes 15 years non-prorated repair coverage and 15 years / 2 years non-prorated replacement coverage. (See mattress warranties: what you should know.)
Return policy B The mattress can be returned for 75 days for a full refund minus the original delivery charge (usually around $95).
Customer service A Saatva’s customer service is strong (but not flawless) and is the main strength of the company.
Delivery timeliness & quality D Saatva beds have a greater-than-average delivery time of about 7-20 days. Also, about 25% of customers report some kind of problem with delivery / set up including delays, poor communication from delivery company, and mattress damage / dirtying. Saatva customer service almost always rectifies such problems quickly, but customers can nevertheless be inconvenienced.
Marketing accuracy D Learn more.
Specs disclosed B+ By disclosing mattress specifications, a company allows consumers to know what they are buying and helps them to comparison shop.
Time in business C- Saatva began operations in 2011.
BBB rating A+ Saatva has an “A+” rating with the Better Business Bureau. Four complaints have been filed against the company in the past three years which is better than average for a mattress company of its size. Learn more about the meaning of BBB ratings.
SLTD rating B- SLTD (Sleep Like The Dead) company rating of “B-” for Saatva Inc. is determined by averaging the above company ratings.

Marketing Accuracy

The Good

Saatva clearly states that their mattresses are not suited for everyone due to the fact that highly soft and highly firm models are not available. This is in contrast to some mattress companies who say that their mattress provides universal comfort even if they offer only one model / firmness.

The Bad

Saatva claims a 4.9 out of 5 rating for their mattress (brand) based on over 10,000 reviews – which according to Saatva makes it the best reviewed mattress (brand) on Google.

Saatva claims that 12,000+ people have reviewed their mattress (brand). Sleep Like The Dead finds that only about 23% of these people wrote their review when they were in actual possession of their Saatva mattress and had slept on it for more than three nights. The rest of the people – at least 70% – had not yet taken possession of the mattress at the time of writing their review; their review was solicited around the time of purchase and is an evaluation of the online ordering process only.

An argument could be made that the ordering process is a part of the brand experience, and that reviews of this process can be legitimately included in reviews of Saatva. Nevertheless, disclosure from Saatva on the nature of these reviews is warranted as consumers seem to wrongly assume that all or most of the reviews evaluate primarily the mattress itself.

From the 12,000+ reviews, Saatva claims a 4.9 out of 5 evaluation for their mattress. Sleep Like The Dead’s examination of the reviews finds the rating to be closer to 4.8 / 5. A greater discrepancy is apparent, however, when only the reviews of people who have taken possession of their mattress and have slept on it for more than three nights are considered. For these people overall, the evaluation is 4.25 out of 5.

The Questionable

The meaning of Saatva’s claim that it is the “best reviewed mattress on Google” is unclear. If it means that in relation to other mattress brands, Saatva has the greatest volume of reviews on the web and also the highest ratio of positive reviews to negative reviews, then Sleep Like The Dead cannot comment on the claim’s accuracy. We do not evaluate mattresses by this measure because the results can be too easily manipulated.

Also, Saatva claims that its mattress will last 10-15 years. Given that the average innerspring mattress lasts about 6.5 years with regular use, Saatva’s claim is probably too optimistic.

Finally, Saatva claims that its mattress is “ultra premium.” In the opinion of Sleep Like The Dead, the coil-on-coil spring system is arguably premium. However, no other aspect of the mattress seems to live up to such a strong claim.

Key Comparisons

Owner Satisfaction

The Saatva mattress has 81% owner satisfaction – a rate that is significantly higher than that of the average innerspring mattress (64%). The higher-than-average rate for Saatva can be explained by two factors.

First and foremost, owner satisfaction is significantly helped by Saatva’s strong customer service. Owner experiences show that the company – unlike most innerspring mattress manufacturers / retailers – has a history of doing just about anything to satisfy the customer. This may include, for example, sending a free topper to the customer to improve comfort during break-in and or exchanging / replacing the mattress promptly without feet dragging.

Second, Saatva’s mattress design and materials also likely impact owner satisfaction positively to a limited degree.

saatva comparison chart

The price of the Saatva mattress is lower than that of the average mattress and similar to that of the average innerspring mattress (not including innerspring hybrids). Saatva compares favorably price-wise against mattresses with generally similar specs – especially offerings from Serta, Sealy, and Simmons.

saatva price compare

A Saatva queen-sized mattress weighs 110 pounds in the 11.5 inch height and 120 pounds in the 14.5 inch height. Both weights are above average. On the plus side, a heavier weight keeps a mattress in place and gives it an upscale and substantial quality. On the down side, a heavier weight makes a mattress more difficult to lift, handle, transport and move.

saatva weight compare

Although Saatva sells only online, their delivery is different from that of most other online mattress retailers. In fact, Saatva’s delivery is similar to that of a traditional, brick and mortar retailer. See the following comparison for pros and cons of the different delivery methods.

Saatva Most Other Online Mattress Retailers Most Brick / Mortar Mattress Retailers
Mattress comes compressed / vacuum sealed no often no
